    RAZR Wont Charge

     The wife and I both have razrs that are doing the same thing, so I'm hoping this can be an easy fix. The phones may or may not charge when plugged in. When plugged into a computer USB, sometimes it doesn't do anything. Won't even recognize that its plugged in. When plugged into a wall outlet, it will show that its charging (with the lightning bolt over the battery) but it may or may not charge. I've plugged it in the last couple nights with 10% and 15% battery power remaining before I've gone to bed. It shows charging, but have waken up 8-9 hours later only to find that its still at the same battery level as it was the night before. It does this with my phone and my wife's phone. Am I doing something wrong here? I just want the damn things to charge when I plug them in.

      Not trying to treat you like a dummy, but here are a couple of suggestions...give them a try and see if they resolve your issue:

      -Make sure you're using the cable and charger that came with your phone...others may work...but then again they may not.

      -Power the phone off before you plug the phone into the charger...not the USB connection on a computer...use the wall charger.

      -If this doesn't solve the issue then you might consider doing a factory reset...I know...the last thing you want to do if you've spent a lot of time downloading and setting up your phone, but may be the solution to your problem.

      -If all the above fails I'd take the phone back to Verizon and let them either replace the phone or fix the issue.

      I suspect that jpcalhoun may have touched on something that's very possible. When I bought my Razr, I also ordered two data/charging cables from Verizon (there's a post on this board somewhere and on the VZW board). Although those cables would charge via the wall, when I plugged them into the USB on my laptop, Windows told me my device was faulty and to replace it, or else it did nothing at all and there was no USB symbol in the status bar of the phone. I purchased some short, really inexpensive Moto branded cables at Amazon, and they work for charging and for data.  Although certainly possible, statistically, it would be a real rarity for both you and your wife to have gotten identically "lemony" devices.  If you are using the boxed cable, then VZW should help you out.

      Using a different USB/charging cable other than the one that came with the phone has been documented as problematic else where, particularly for connecting the Razr to your computer to sync or otherwise exchange data.  Some cables (other than the one that came with the Razr) just will not work for data.  I don't think it is a stretch to assume you could have charging issues also.

      Thanks for the quick replies guys!  Here's a little more info.

       

      - I'm only using the USB cables and AC adapter that came with the phones.  I haven't tried anything else, although I might if I can't seem to find any other solution.

       

      - This seems to be totally random.  I might try plugging it into the computer and it does nothing, then I plug it into the outlet and it charges, or the other way around.  The last couple nights when it was plugged into the outlet and still at the same charging state/level when I woke up, I immediately plugged it into the computer and it began charging.  

       

      - This is doing the same thing with both phones, so though possible, I find it hard to believe that both phones are defective.  

       

      - Here's an odd one too.  I plugged both phones into the same AC adapter.  In three hours, the wife's phone charged and my battery level hadn't moved.  Both said they were charging though.  

       

      - I'll start powering them off before charging to see if that works.

       Mine did the same thing for a while on both the wall charger and the dock.  I had to power off then plug it in.  Also for some reason you can not charge using USB via computer with the dock Sta. to charge the Razr. some have said not enough power coming through the USB to work dock and charge the phone.

      Now mine works fine ( why? dont know? )

      Well, I now see I am not the only one.  I have noticed that EVERY TIME this has happened, it started in my car dock.  I would plug it into the dock and the car dock app would not start.  Unplugging and plugging did not fix the problem.  I then tried plugging the phone into the USB in my office (plugged into my computer), and that would not charge the phone either.  I finally rebooted the phone and it would charge again from the computer and the dock.  There is obviously a problem with the phone.  When it gets in this state it will not charge anywhere for me until I reboot the phone.  

      Matt, is there any open bug for this right now?

       I would suggest that there is a problem with the dock software and not the phone.

      My issues with the car dock and home dock have included charging problems and freezing. Often the phone does not recognize the home dock unless you unplug the dock from the power supply and then reconnect it. 

      This morning the phone lost its' mind when plugged into my car dock. Frown Only the notification bar was showing and it was unresponsive.

      It would not respond to anything including repeated attempts to do a hard reset. I plugged it in at work (directly to the charger and not the dock) and it finally allowed me to reboot it.

      I believe the dock software needs some looking into. Never had these problems with prior droids (DX, DX2, D3).

       Im would like to offer this info that I found with mine. I use the otterbox defender and found most OEM cables have a fairly large thumb hold on the end of the cord and while it felt fully engaged in the port it was not. I usaed my kindle charge cord and it goes everywhere with me now. it fits in even with the otterbox on and engages perfectly and have not had the issue since switching to the kindle cord.

      I don't know about you guys but mine wouldn't charge then went dead,  Sent it to motorola and they stated the battery ribbon cable had physical damange and are saying the will not repair do to physical damage I have heard on other forms people wit hthe is issue and I am not sure if the will offer to have me purchase the replacement battery or not but I and others think it is a design failure that the cable is tight and the battery moves at all say if you toss it on your bed or a couch it can tear the cable.... I will see what support says right now they are saying the won't repair it.  :( so treat your phone with kid gloves also if anyone has a battery and knows how to replace it or can help if they don't I would be appericated.  I don't know how they can say I caused physical damage to a phone I can't even get to the battery on.
